Over the past year and a half, TechSolve has undergone a period of growth and transition, spanning from a location change to hiring Dan Catalano as the new CEO. With over 30 years of experience in the manufacturing industry, Dan has firsthand experience with many of the challenges faced by manufacturers today. 

“We’re witnessing a resurgence of principles that were foundational in the ‘80s and ‘90s regarding continuous improvement,” Dan says. “This revival is not merely a nod to the past; it underscores the importance of integrating modern technologies, such as automation and sensors, into these time-tested practices. These organizations are not just automating individual processes but are rethinking entire production systems, encompassing everything from supply chain management to distribution logistics.”

“Conversely, smaller manufacturers often focus on foundational operational practices, like workforce training and day-to-day productivity enhancements. These organizations are concerned with immediate operational issues: how to improve product quality, reduce scrap, and ensure customer satisfaction.”

“This dichotomy highlights a broader trend: The simultaneous need for advanced technology adoption and the foundational improvements that enable organizations to thrive. Our role at TechSolve is to assist clients in navigating these complexities, ensuring they can leverage technology while enhancing their core operational competencies.”

What are some of the biggest challenges your clients face today?

“Our clients face a wide array of challenges, but a few common themes are emerging. Many manufacturers are grappling with the need for a disciplined culture of continuous improvement, where strategic priorities are consistently pursued. This structured approach is crucial, especially when it comes to internal processes and external compliance requirements.”

“For instance, many of our clients need to establish frameworks for cybersecurity to meet the stringent demands of larger global OEMs. These larger entities often require their suppliers to adhere to specific certifications and criteria to maintain business relationships. Thus, manufacturers must invest time and resources to enhance their internal capabilities, which can be a significant challenge, particularly for those who may already be overwhelmed with immediate operational demands.”

How is the current economic climate impacting the manufacturing industry and your clients?

“The current economic climate presents a complex mix of challenges and opportunities for the manufacturing sector. On one hand, there is a prevailing sense of optimism, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Companies are eager to capitalize on rebounding demand and invest in growth. Many are looking to leverage this economic recovery to enhance their operational efficiencies and drive innovation.”

“However, there’s also a tightening of margins and profitability. During tougher economic times, companies often feel the pressure to reduce costs, which can create an environment ripe for the need for continuous improvement initiatives. These are precisely the moments when it’s vital for manufacturers to double down on investments in process enhancements and operational excellence.”

“In fact, we often find that companies in challenging situations are more inclined to seek our expertise, recognizing that this is the time to implement meaningful changes that can lead to greater resilience and strength in the long run.”

How do you approach leadership and inspire your team as the CEO of TechSolve?

“Since joining TechSolve 17 months ago, my approach to leadership has been informed by my extensive experience in manufacturing. I believe in the power of observation and listening. Coming into any organization, it’s essential not to assume you have all the answers; rather, you must assess the landscape, ask questions, and truly listen to your team.”

“Leadership also requires immersion and commitment. I strive to set high standards and expectations while showing compassion and understanding. If team members see that I am committed to the organization and genuinely care about our collective mission, they are more likely to engage passionately in their roles.”

“Moreover, fostering an environment where everyone feels they are making a meaningful impact is crucial.
